Interested in learning more about soil health but not sure where to start? Join us for a two-day Beginners Soil Health School featuring practical field demonstrations, classroom discussions, and opportunities to learn from experienced soil health practitioners and agronomists.

September 3
We’ll kick off the event in the field with a rainfall simulator demonstration and hands-on soil assessments. Participants will see firsthand how soil structure, infiltration, biology, and management practices impact soil performance. Depending on field conditions, we’ll also spend time identifying cover crop species and discussing their role in building healthy soils.
Lunch will feature brisket from Wurst Machers.
In the afternoon, Joe Ailts will provide an introduction to soil health, covering the core principles of soil function, cover crop basics, soil biology, and how improving soil health can increase resiliency on the farm. Joe will then take a deeper dive into agronomy and nutrient cycling, discussing how soil health practices influence crop production and nutrient availability.
The day will wrap up with a happy hour and cookout featuring burgers and plenty of time for conversation with fellow farmers and speakers.
September 4
Day two will begin with field plot demonstrations where participants can observe soil health practices in action and discuss management considerations.
Back in the classroom, Dorian Gatchell will lead a discussion on weed management strategies within soil health systems. Myron Sylling will follow with a session on fertilizer timing, sharing practical insights on improving nutrient efficiency while supporting long-term soil health goals.
